Lions, Tigers, and Dragon seals: Chinese-language film distribution in North American cinemas

Abstract

Since the 2000s, considerable academic and popular attention has turned to the transnational scramble for rapidly exploding box-office revenues in the People’s Republic of China. However, a concurrent expansion and diversification of theatrical releases for Chinese-language cinemas in North America has been generally overlooked or analyzed within limited frameworks emphasizing production background, story content, and audience reception. The authors note a gap in understanding the role of distribution shaping Chinese-language film access and address. This article traces the evolution of Chinese-language theatrical distribution in North America since 1992 via historical and comparative analyses of the acquisition priorities, marketing and release strategies, and target audiences of three key distributors: Sony Pictures Classics, Well Go U.S.A. Entertainment, and China Lion. It argues the history and operations of these three reveal evolving power dynamics critically shaping the accessibility of Chinese-language films in North America.
