Abstract

Due to an increasing number of students with special educational needs (SEN) completing their early schooling successfully, inclusive education (IE) within higher education (HE) is required and attracted researchers. The purpose of this study is to map the research literature on IE in HE since, 1994, the year of Salamanca statement when IE was first formally introduced internationally. In this study, bibliometric analysis was used to help understand the developmental stage of research themes of an academic field. Publications on the topic indexed at the Web of Science (WOS) were evaluated. A total of 367 articles published between 1994 and May 2022 were selected as dealing specifically with the subject. Finally, this study draws mapping for the characteristics, frontiers and hot points of IE within HE field, as well as discusses future research strategies.
