Abstract
The study of residential homes for elderly people has been a sustained interest in social policy, geographical, sociological and gerontological research. Retirement homes play an essential part in caring for dependent members of society and, as the elderly population and levels of impairment and disability increases, they no doubt will continue to play an important role in a full spectrum of care. Over the past two decades, homes, their proprietors, staff, and residents have been investigated from a number of perspectives. However, the context has changed and this is the first research, to date, to consider such settings under the policy climate of care in the community.
