Abstract
In the context of densely populated urban centers facing dual challenges of demographic and infrastructure aging, this study examines Macau S.A.R.'s innovative response through a public senior housing project. Targeting senior homeowners in tenement buildings, the project aims to integrates social, medical, and senior care resources to address housing challenges in aging urban environments. The research explores obstacles hindering seniors from aging in place, analyzes government resource allocation efficiency in the novel housing scheme, and examines motivating factors for senior homeowners considering relocation.
The research methodology employs social listening, utilizing a cloud-based platform for unobtrusive data collection from various online sources, including social media platforms, online forums, newspapers, government official press releases, and association websites. Data collection spans from 2019 to 2023, with a precise focus on Macau S.A.R., ensuring relevance to the government's public senior housing initiative. This holistic data collection approach, encompassing both traditional and contemporary media sources, enhances the research's depth and reliability.
The findings contribute to the conference theme of "Best Practices of Social Policy in Turbulent Times" by addressing the challenges of population aging and offering insights into Macau S.A.R.'s pioneering approach to navigate these turbulent demographic shifts through an integrated public senior housing initiative. This study not only provides valuable considerations for similar urbanized cities globally but also emphasizes the importance of motivating senior homeowners to relocate for optimal living environments in the midst of evolving social and demographic landscapes.
