No banjo on this knee

Moore reviews the book Milking the Moon: A Southerner’s Story of Life On This Planet, by Eugene Walter. "The most famous man you've never heard of" announces the dust cover of this book. Well, now you've heard of him, and not a moment too soon. In this addictively readable memoir, Eugene Walter -- writer, editor, actor, translator, and raconteur extraordinaire -- paints a vivid picture of a life lived both on the periphery and in the very heart of things. Walter (1921-1998) grew up in Mobile, Alabama, which he describes as the "northernmost station of the Caribbean...North Haiti, not North America." The culture and pace of life there owed more to Europe than to the American South. Walter would later emigrate to Rome by way of New York and Paris.
