Old age pensions

Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the phases of reform and development of the pension system for Chinese urban and rural residents since the 1950s, including the discussion on the Urban Employee Basic Pension (UEBP), the Urban Resident Pension (URP), the Public Employee Pension (PEP), the Old Rural Pension Scheme (ORPS), the New Rural Pension Scheme (NRPS), and the Urban and Rural Resident Pension (URRP). The reform and development of the old age pension system in China are determined by economic developments, institutional changes and political considerations. Focusing on the structure and characteristics of China's multipillar pension system, the chapter also draws attention to the existing challenges related to the issues of fragmentation, inequality and sustainability of pension policies in China.
