Abstract
Pb-free silver pastes based on SnO-B2O3 glass frits were synthesized and used for the front-contact electrodes of crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells. First, four kinds of SnO-B2O3 glass frits with different amounts of SnO were synthesized by a melt-quenching method, and four Ag pastes based on these glass frits were prepared correspondingly. Then, Ag pastes were printed on c-Si solar cells and fired to form electrodes. The photovoltaic performance of the cells was measured and analyzed. The surface morphology of Ag electrodes was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. The experimental results showed that the peak firing temperature of the Ag pastes had a significant influence on the cell efficiency. The Ag pastes fired at 760 °C possessed the densest microstructure and the largest efficiency. The maximum efficiency was 10.4% with the optimal glass composition. In addition, the Ag/Si interfacial microstructure was studied by scanning transmission electron microscopy. It was found that Ag crystallites and granules of Ag-Sn intermetallic compound were embedded in the SiNx anti-reflection coating, indicating that the photocurrent could be conducted through these metallic granules besides a direct ohmic contact between bulk Ag and Si emitter. The experimental data showed that SnO-B2O3 was a promising glass frit to be used in the front-contact Ag pastes for c-Si solar cells.
