Abstract

In this workshop, we ill on how plug & play materials developed for a specific teaching and learning context can be treated as “learning objects” adaptable to alternative pedagogical contexts by various users. We will start by explaining the notion of “learning object” using examples ultimately aimed at training students enrolled in professional communication courses to analyze job application messages using basic notions from Systemic Functional Linguistics and Communication Theories. After discussing the rationale behind these plug & play materials with explicit reference to language education scholarship, participants will be invited to suggest ways of adapting these learning objects onto teaching and learning contexts relevant to them. At the end of the workshop we will talk you through the process of designing, creating and submitting something to Plug and Play, including guidelines for video submissions, tips on recording high quality learning objects, the role of story-boarding and adding subtitles, among others.
