Research output: Other Conference ContributionsPresentation

Abstract

Purpose: The UN World Population Prospects (2024) estimate a global population of 830 million people aged sixty-five or older, with an expected increase to 1.7 billion by 2054. This highlights the need for further research on active ageing worldwide. This study examines the experiences of commercial transport workers in urban Ghana as they prepare for aging using Theory of work adjustment and role identity theory

Design/Methods: A semi-structured interview guide was used with a group of fifteen people from Ghana's Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem district as part of an interpretivist qualitative study method. The purposive sampling method was used to select participants, analyse the data by identifying emerging themes, and compare our findings with existing theories and literature.

Findings: The study reveals the distinctive conditions faced by commercial transport workers, their expertise, and the impact of the work environment and social identities on their retirement strategies.

Originality/Value: From a policy perspective, it offers a comprehensive framework for understanding retirement strategies and provides insights for enhancing financial security in old age for these workers. In a theoretical sense, the study helps us understand how the theories of work adjustment and role identity theory can be used to explain retirement strategies in sub-Saharan Africa.
