Abstract

This paper examines the factors affecting the success of rail-based transit-oriented development in Hong Kong. The factors are classified into four dimensions: (1) land use; (2) station characteristics; (3) human factors and (4) competition from bus. Multiple regression model is built to explain the relative importance of different factors in influencing railway patronage. The results suggest that factors in all four dimensions contributed to the success of rail-based transit-oriented development in Hong Kong, and a comprehensive set of policies is recommended to increase railway patronage.
