Abstract
Hong Kong has a rich tradition of wind band culture that has been in existence for a considerable period of time. Although wind music has a significant historical background, it has not garnered widespread recognition and has consistently held an inferior position both as an art form and in academic research within the realm of arts.
The primary focus of this article is to examine the author’s research process and the obstacles faced while investigating the history of Hong Kong’s wind bands. The author employed qualitative research methods, which involved gathering various archival materials such as old newspapers, house programs, recordings, music scores, photos, performance clips, government documents, and conducting oral histories. This allowed the author to reconstruct the literature surrounding the development of wind bands in Hong Kong.
Furthermore, the article will also address the limitations involved in transforming reconstructed literary work into research that receives official funding. In addition, practice-led research techniques will be utilized to examine several research projects that have received funding. These projects encompass the creation of scholarly books discussing the history of wind bands in Hong Kong, the coordination of lecture concerts featuring historical remakes, and the facilitation of forums focused on wind band studies, exploring their processes and challenges. Simultaneously, this article will offer recommendations on the creation of new academic theories using historical preservation materials. This article will employ concerts as a research approach in examining the impact of historical concerts on arts education.
