Revisiting the Epistemology of Interpreting Studies

Research output: Book Chapters | Papers in Conference ProceedingsBook ChapterResearchpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter lays a conceptual foundation for the book by revisiting the epistemology of interpreting studies, for which a multidimensional model is proposed. Then a framework is proposed to capture the distinctive features of interpreting, which defines the nature of interpreting by distinguishing it from other forms of translation (esp. written translation) and delineates the research objects of interpreting studies. In the last section, major variables shaping the interpreting performance and product are outlined and discussed.
