Abstract

This chapter presents the principles of shape smoothing-that is, the shape scale spaces and the "five principles." The "five principles" include pyramidal principle, inclusion principle, local inclusion principle, figure-background reversal principle, and isotropy. The chapter analyzes the algorithms on dynamic shape, iterated weighted median filter, heat equation on curves, renormalized heat equation on curves, and the iterated affine erosion.
