Abstract

Strategic Interaction is a 147 page-long book published in 1969 by the University of Pennsylvania Press. The German edition (Strategische Interaktion) was published in 1981. This relatively slim volume contains a short preface and two essays: Expression Games. An Analysis of Doubts at Play and Strategic Interaction. In this book, Goffman engages with game theory, which is explicitly mentioned several times in the preface and in the two essays. A closer reading shows though that Goffman does not engage with the formal aspects of game theory but rather takes reference to this theory as an occasion for laying out his program of research. The article introduces the two essays and outlines their reception.
