Strategies and Norms of Information Processing in Interpreting

Abstract

This chapter discusses strategies and norms of information processing in interpreting. Section 1 summarises typical interpreting strategies of information processing. Section 2 discusses the concept of norm in interpreting studies and summarises the norms that are prescribed by professional associations. Section 3 presents a corpus-based analysis of actual norms in interpreting, which are illustrated with authentic examples from real-life interpreting done by professional interpreters. Section 4 presents a comparison between ‘prescribed norms’ and ‘actual norms’ in interpreting.
