Abstract

This paper studies the technical efficiency of joint ventures and domestic enterprises in Shanghai during the period of 1989-1992. Among the four existing types of ownership, Shanghai's manufacturing joint ventures stand out superbly by sustaining steady increases in technical efficiency for each year in all four industries. Moreover, there is a positive relationship between firm size and technical efficiency for joint ventures suggesting that large joint ventures do have a technical advantage over their smaller counterparts.
