Abstract

This article reports findings of the first study on the signs on the hindquarters of the horses in the several albums of the "Eighteen Songs of a Nomad Flute" in Taipei Palace Museum, abbreviated as the "Horse Signs". No such study has been reported in the literature. The purpose of this study is to verify the original dates of the albums through investigation of the "Horse Signs" in these albums.

We found that the "Horse Signs" are neither surmise nor makeup. In fact, they are the exact and real words used by Khitan and Jurchen tribes. The Khitan and Jurchen words were established, promulgated, and exterminated in a very short period of time. These two types of words were used simultaneously between 1119—1191 of the Chin dynasty. We also found that the albums in Taipei Palace Museum are dated in the same period. Specifically, according to some clues of the "Horse Signs", the Taipei albums may further pointed to the Hai-ling-king of the Chin Dynasty.
