Abstract

The present essay attempts to examine two major traditions in Chinese literature, namely lyricism and narrative, from a cultural perspective based on the “Monograph on Literary Writing” of the Hanshu and the Wenxin diaolong. It argues that these two traditions have a substantial presence in these two sources and that they have an undividable relationship. It also demonstrates the national characteristics of these traditions as seen in the so-called “nine streams and ten schools” in the “Monograph on Literary Writing,” which form a contrast with its counterpart in Western thought.
