Abstract

This paper describes an academic performance appraisal initiative undertaken by the author in conjunction with academic staff and students of the Department of Management of the Hong Kong Polytechnic. The initiative involved the develop-ment of a set of behaviourally based performance rating scales and the design of a multi-appraisal method. In addition, a strategy for implementation was proposed. It is argued that the current emphasis on performance measurement in Hong Kong higher education has given particular relevance to this initiative.
